Synagogue throws a party to welcome its new Torah
To honor of the completion of its new Torah, Congregation Beth David in Saratoga invites the community to attend a celebration on June 11, beginning at 10 a.m. at its campus at 19700 Prospect Road.
Rabbi Daniel Pressman and Cantor Melanie Fine will lead a procession across the parking lot and into the sanctuary, joyfully carrying the synagogue's newly scribed sefer Torah.
For the past year, a sefer--a specially trained scribe--in Israel has written this Torah by hand. It includes the 248 columns of the Five Books of Moses, also known as the pentateuch.
The last few letters have been left intentionally incomplete so that Beth David members can finish the task. This is in keeping with the 613th Commandment of the Jewish People--that everyone is to write a Torah. Members will take turns touching the tip of the sefer's pen and helping to fill in the outlined shapes of the final letters.
The event includes singing by the adult and children's choirs, congregational songs and dancing. A klezmer band will perform, followed by a catered lunch provided by the synagogue.
