    Youth Science Institute plans summer camps

    The nonprofit Youth Science Institute is taking signups now for its Summer Science Day Camps, which will be held at the YSI Nature Center in Sanborn-Skyline County Park in Saratoga. A few classes were already filled as of last week, but most are still available.

    All programs are age-specific: Group A consists of 3- to 4-year-olds; Group B is kids entering kindergarten and first grade; Group C is for incoming second through fourth grades; and Group D is for fourth through sixth graders. Some of the day camp classes include Bugology, Living on Light, Groovy Growing, Phunky Physics, Habitat Hunt, Splash Bash, Mighty Forest, Indians & Pioneers, Bird Brains, Water Is Wonderful and Nature's Drama.

    Some classes are also available at the YSI Nature Center in Los Gatos' Vasona Lake County Park. Call 408.867.6940 or 408.356.4945.

    Hakone Gardens plans decorative gourd workshop

    As part of the various art classes it offers to the community, Saratoga's Hakone Gardens, at 21000 Big Basin Way, offers a decorative gourd workshop on June 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Taught by San Jose artist Jennifer Wool, workshop participants create artistic accents for their homes by decorating large gourds. Techniques include wood-burning, dyeing, painting, weaving and twining. All supplies will be provided. Participants should bring a bag lunch. Cost is $50, plus a $10 materials fee.     Special Olympics seeks volunteers to help in events

    The Northern California/ Santa Clara County chapter of the Special Olympics seeks volunteers to help out during its summer season. Mentally challenged athletes need coaches to help them learn new skills and have fun while participating in softball, cycling and walking activities.
