WVC nears end in chancellor search
The nationwide search for a new West Valley College-Mission Community College District chancellor is now down to three candidates.
* Mary Spangler, president of Los Angeles City College in the Los Angeles Community College District;
* Linda Salter, president of Skyline College in the San Mateo Community College District; and
* Robert Messina, president of Burlington Community College in Pemberton, N.J.
Once the board makes a final selection, the new chancellor could start as early as the end of June.
Lois A. Callahan currently serves as interim chancellor for the district. She replaced Rose Tseng, who left WV-MCCD in 1998 for a job in Hawaii.
City endorses L.A. in landmark case
Saratoga has signed its name to a list of California cities that are supporting the city of Los Angeles in a case that, if the California Supreme Court decides for the plaintiff, could take away immunity from liability when cities make property inspections.
In Haggis v. City of Los Angeles, a home in Pacific Palisades was damaged after the Northridge earthquake in 1994, and the owner contends he wouldn't have bought the house if he had known the bluff it was on was unstable. He contends the city was obligated to inform him on the title of the property, but never did.
The case was all but dead until the state Supreme Court agreed to review an appeal. But now cities throughout California are worried that the case could expose them to claims that they made inadequate inspections, and that could be very expensive to municipal governments.
