Jim Shaw says illness won't keep him away from duties

By Sarah Lombardo

Vice Mayor Jim Shaw's recent absence from some City Council meetings and council liaison assignments will not become a habit, he said, despite concerns that health problems might keep him from his council duties.

"No, you're stuck with ol' Jim Shaw," he quipped.

Last month, Shaw entered the hospital for a routine surgery and took a short leave of absence. News that doctors had discovered a malignant growth during the surgery led to concerns that Shaw may have to take an extended leave of absence from his work on the council.

And those concerns soon led to rumors that Shaw--a vocal supporter of the contentious Measure G who was elected along with Stan Bogosian in an upset in November 1996--might eventually have to step down from the council.

Not so, Shaw announced last week.

Shaw said he and his doctor decided to follow "a light program of chemotherapy and radiation. And he said he doesn't think it'll be much of a problem at all when it comes to my work on the council."

The news came as a relief to fellow councilmembers.

"I'm delighted and pleased that he's being restored to good health," Mayor Don Wolfe said. "He looks fit and, as always, is in good humor as well."
