Swim stars take over as Brookside coaches

Lloyd, Sherburne return to club where they started

By Dick Sparrer

Erica Allen, Chris Lloyd and Lauren Sherburne have each just completed successful swimming seasons for their respective schools.

But just because they are now out of the water, that doesn't mean that the swimming year has ended for the three.

They're all back in action this summer--not as swimmers, but as coaches for the Brookside Swim Team in Saratoga.

For both Lloyd and Sherburne, it's a return to where it all began for them as competitive swimmers.

Lloyd started swimming as a 4-year-old for Brookside. He just completed his freshman year at Claremont McKenna College, where he play water polo and was a member of the swimming team.

Lloyd just completed an outstanding swim season at Claremont McKenna. He was fifth in the mile at the NCAA Division 3 finals. He was also 11th in the 500-meter freestyle and 12th in the 400 individual medley.

Sherburne is another Brookside product. She started with the local club as a 9-year-old and now returns to help coach the squad. Sherburne has been swimming competitively since she was 7 years old and is now a junior at Mitty High School, where she plays water polo and competes for the swimming team.

Allen joins the two Saratoga swimmers as a Brookside coach. She is a freshman at Boston College where she earned a swimming scholarship. She has been swimming competitively since she was 4 years old, and she was the captain of her high school team in Nashua, N.H.

While attending school in Boston, she helped to teach Special Olympics athletes how to swim.

Boys and girls age 18 and under swim for the Brookside Waves. The squad is one of six teams from the South Bay that competes in the Junipero Serra Swim League.
