Saratoga NewsVillage BriefsLocal Sierra Club branch has meeting The Guadalupe Regional Group of the Sierra Club's Loma Prieta Chapter hosts a special environmental presentation on June 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Saratoga Library, located at 13650 Saratoga Ave. Interested non-Sierra Club members are welcome. Santa Clara County District Attorney George Kennedy will discuss recent innovations in the prosecution of environmental crimes, including the Circuit Prosecutor Project. The CPP is designed to ensure that environmental laws are uniformly enforced statewide and provides five prosecutors for use by California district attorneys. The project is funded by the United States and California Environmental Protection Agencies and the Department of Fish and Game. Explore fitness with recreation classes The Saratoga Recreation Department has many activities and classes planned that involve various combinations of physical and mental fitness for people of different ages. A 10-week yoga program, taught by Nancy Jamello, begins on June 15 with meetings on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. The classes are a contemporary blend of traditional and untraditional hatha yoga. Mats are provided. Fees are $66 for residents and $76 for non-residents. Those seeking a more fast-moving discipline can sign up for a six-week karate program that begins on June 17. Students will learn the traditional Japanese martial art of karate as well as the character aspects of self-discipline, self-respect and self-confidence. Class times and fees vary depending upon students' age groups and skill levels. For young people between 8 and 14 who enjoy animals and the outdoors, the Rec Department offers introductory horseback riding classes at Garrod Farms, located at 22600 Mt. Eden Road in Saratoga. Among the skills covered are mounting, balance, reining, commands and safety. Students should wear long pants or jeans and boots or hard-soled shoes. Fee is $84.
