Saratoga NewsPanthers picked to all-league teamBy Dick Sparrer Frank Marotti had a pretty good idea what to expect from his Prospect baseball team in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League this spring. He figured his club would finish second or third in the division, and that Gunderson would win the league title. Well, he was close. Willow Glen actually won the Santa Teresa Division championship, with Gunderson second. And his own Panthers finished a very close third in the division race. The Rams posted a 15-3 record to win the division flag. Gunderson ended up second at 12-6, with Prospect a close third at 11-7. So when it came time for the division coaches to pick their all-league team, it came as little surprise to see Willow Glen players walking off with top honors, but Gunderson and Prospect were also well-represented. Willow Glen's Gary Ferraro and Ryan Davis were named the co-most valuable players in the division. They were joined on the all-league first team by teammates Steve Booth, Ross Parker and Eric Brugioni. Prospect placed four players on the all-league first team list this spring. Senior infielder Mark Johnston, senior outfielder Steve Bond and senior designated hitter Brandon Morgan all won first-team honors for the Panthers, along with junior Danny Baucus, who was named in a utility role. Junior Nick Crawford won second-team honors as a pitcher for Prospect. Rounding out the Santa Teresa Division first team were Dan Foley, Rashaun Owens and Donovan Minero of Gunderson; Jojo Quinata and Ryan Humphreys of Independence; Anthony Carusa and Nick Mitchell of Del Mar; and Ace Alderette and Jose Casorla of Overfelt. Winning all-league second team spots were Rudy Martinez and Gil Moises of Overfelt; Johnny Moreali, Ryan Pellazzari, Jeff Jones and Casey Minister of Del Mar; David Dudley, Sal Politi and Grant Sager of Willow Glen; Jason Lopez and Brad Barttels of Gunderson; and Rich Aguilar of Independence.
