And for those youngsters who would rather pitch baseballs than pitch tents, or who would prefer to shoot a basketball than shoot a bow and arrow, there are plenty of camps right here in the area. Girls' Basketball Clinic A summer basketball clinic for girls in grades 7-12 will be held June 23-July 24, 1-3 p.m. each day (Monday through Thursday each week), in the gym at Saratoga High School. The cost is $150 per player. Saratoga girls' varsity basketball head coach Bret Yeilding will serve as camp director, with former top players assisting as clinic staff members. Summer Conditioning Los Gatos will host a summer conditioning camp for varsity, junior varsity and frosh-soph athletes June 23-Aug. 8 at the school. Varsity athletes will attend weekdays 8-10 a.m., and junior varsity and frosh-soph athletes are scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The cost is $100, and the camp is open to all athletes. Registration forms are available in the main office at the high school. Williams Hoop Camp The annual Sid Williams Basketball Camp returns to Fisher Middle School July 14-18. The camp is designed for "motivated players" entering the fifth-ninth grades. Session 1 for boys and girls entering the fifth and sixth grades will be held 1-3:30 p.m. each day, and players entering the seventh-ninth grades will attend Session 2 from 4 to 7 p.m. For more information, call 358-9323. SCU Baseball School Santa Clara University baseball coaches Mike Cummins and Lou Lucas will host their annual Santa Clara Baseball School with three sessions set for June and July for players ages 9-16. Session I runs June 23-27, with Session II set for July 7-11. The camp covers basic fundamentals and hitting from 9 a.m. to noon, with a special pitching session from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The cost is $100 for the morning session and $50 for the pitching session. Session III will feature special hitting-only camps July 21-25, 9-10:15 a.m. and 10:30-11:45 a.m. The cost is $50 per session. The school features individualized instruction in playing defense, base running, sliding and hitting. Each camper receives a T-shirt, and Bronco caps will be given to contest winners. SJSU Baseball Camp San Jose State University head baseball coach Sam Piraro will lead the camp coaching staff at the 13th annual San Jose State Summer Baseball Camp at the school's practice baseball field. The camp, open to boys and girls ages 6-15, will be held in two sessions, July 14-18 and July 21-25, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. each day and will feature individual drills, group drills, daily scrimmages and individual evaluations. The camp will cover hitting, fielding, base-running, individual positions and teamwork. The cost is $85 per session, and all campers receive a T-shirt and are eligible for daily camper awards. Wrestling Camps Youth wrestling camps return to Los Gatos for the eighth straight year under the direction of Scott Downs, a former LGHS head wrestling coach who remains involved in the program at the high school. Camps are slated for June 16-20 (beginners to intermediates, ages 7-12) and June 23-27 (advanced, ages 11-16, with at least junior high school experience). The cost is $100 per wrestler, and camp hours are 1:30-4:30 p.m. each day in the wrestling room at the high school. Each session is limited to 26 wrestlers. The camp will feature instruction from Downs and Jeff Garlick, the head coach at Fisher Middle School. Wrestlers from the Los Gatos High School program will also assist. Basketball Camps The Los Gatos Wildcat Summer Basketball Camp returns to the high school gym on June 16-20 with sessions for players ages 7-12 and 13-15. The camps, held under the direction of Jim Marino, head coach of the successful basketball program at Los Gatos High, will emphasize fundamentals in shooting, passing, dribbling, defense and team play. There will be drills and games each day, and appearances by guest coaches from throughout the Bay Area. Players ages 7-12 will attend from 9 a.m. to noon and will be grouped by age level and ability level. The cost is $80 per player ($125 for two family members). Players ages 13-15 will attend the camp from 1 to 3 p.m., and the cost is $50 per player. Each session will be limited to 60 players. For more information, call Marino at 354-2730, ext. 269. Basketball Clinic The Northwest YMCA of Cupertino will hold summer basketball clinics for players ages 4-9. Clinics will be held June 16-July 4, and each clinic is one week long. Hours are 5:30-7:30 p.m. weeknights at the Northwest YMCA. The clinic will teach skills, techniques and fair play, and each clinic will be directed by a YMCA instructor. The cost is $40 per week for the clinic, plus a $20 program membership. The registration deadline is June 12. For more information, call 257-7160, ext. 19.
