Girl Scouts earn awards

In order to receive their Silver Award, two Saratoga Girl Scouts planted a garden leading up to the Saratoga Historical Museum.

Jasdeep Khaira and Stephanie Claussen also planted gardens and repaired and painted 12 benches at Blaney Plaza, on the corner of Highway 9 and Big Basin Way.

The girls, members of Cadette Troop 841, are both eighth-graders at Miller Junior High School. They spent more than six months working on and planning the project and received their award May 18 at Evergreen Community College.

Library presents summer programs for the children

The Saratoga Community Library has nearly a dozen activities for the entire family to indulge in this summer. The events begin June 13 and take place afternoons and evenings. Complete lists of times and dates can be picked up at the library or found on its Web page at www-lib.co.santa-clara.ca.us.

Children in first through eighth grades can participate in programs ranging from music to crafts. There are three different storytelling times, including one for preschool children accompanied by adults, one for children ages 3 to 5 and a family story time. There are musical programs for adults and children age 9 and up, art programs for children in kindergarten through eighth grade and computer catalog introductory programs for families with children in the second grade and up.

YLI Group welcomes home Marge Young

Our Lady of Los Gatos Institute 197, which encompasses both Los Gatos and Saratoga, welcomes home Saratogan Marge Young following her year as grand president of the Young Ladies Institute. A homecoming mass will be held on Saturday, June 14, at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. Luncheon follows in the church hall.

The YLI is an organization of Catholic women in California, Oregon, Washington and Hawaii who take on a variety of community service projects. The organization was founded in San Francisco in 1887 by three young women who wanted to help a friend who was ill and without financial means.
