Artist fellowships available for literary and visual artists

Santa Clara County poets and photographers are eligible to apply for a $2,000 artist fellowship from the Arts Council of Santa Clara County. The council will make three awards in each of the two categories.

Application deadlines are July 24. For application forms, contact the Arts Council, 998-2787.

Fellowships were awarded to composers and independent film and video artists in 1995; to short-story writers and sculptors in 1994; to choreographers and computer technology artists in 1993; and to painters in two-dimensional media and writers of creative nonfiction in 1992.

Saratogans place in state talent competition

Candice Goodman, 13, of Saratoga placed second in her age group in the show-tunes division of the recent California State Talent Competition. Stephanie Goodman, 11, received an award of excellence for her solo in the show-music competition.

Sisters Candice and Stephanie placed third as a duet in their age group singing "Do-Re-Me."

Saratoga 4-H member honored at cavy show

Rachel Teagie, 10, a fourth-grade student at Blue Hills Elementary School, was named national achievement winner in her age group during the recent meeting of the American Cavy Breeders Association in San Jose.

The award was presented for her contributions furthering the hobby of raising guinea pigs. She also was named "Duchess," the highest honor for 9- to 11-year-old girls in a youth royalty contest dealing with general knowledge, judging, breed identification and management. Rachel also took home a trophy for "best of breed" for one of her cavies in the youth show.

Rachel became involved in showing through El Sereno 4-H Club. She has won numerous awards at the Santa Clara County Fair and Golden State Cavy Breeders shows. She is also involved in dog care and training, poultry, gardening and food preservation through the 4-H.

Other Saratogans winning ribbons in the show were Margo Lang and Aaron Teagle. Jordan Lang also participated.

Foothill Bamboo Garden gets support

Gordon Holler, professor of art at Foothill College and project coordinator for the Bamboo Garden at the Japanese Cultural Center at Foothill College, was presented a check by the Edward W. Gomersall Scholarship Committee of the Saratoga Sister City organization during the group's May meeting. Muko-shi, Japan, is Saratoga's sister city.

Holler has planted bamboo in the garden at Foothill College and plans to move and to restore a turn-of-the-century Japanese pavilion/tea house which was on the property when the college acquired it.
