Budget passes after staff member found
A peculiar silence washed over the civic theater less than an hour into the June 6 city council meeting. The meeting was far from over, but when it came time for a staff report on next year's budget, Administrative Services Director Mary Jo Walker was nowhere to be found.
After several minutes, Walker appeared--she had been polishing up her report in her office and had underestimated the council's ability to quickly reach the budget item in the middle of the meeting agenda.
Council members took it in stride: "I guess we know why you win all these awards," said Councilman Evan Baker, referring to Walker's recent commendation from a national government accounting group.
Baker and the rest of the council then approved a budget of $34.3 million--including $14 million for library renovation--for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2001, and a preliminary budget of $14.4 million for 2002-03.
Improvements at Congress Springs Park get approval
The city council recently agreed to purchase $115,000 worth of Tifway 2 turf for Congress Springs park. Tifway 2 is the same grass used at Candlestick Park in San Francisco and Network Associates Coliseum in Oakland.
Public Works Director John Cherbone says the turf will allow sports teams to use the park six days per week. And the city will avoid the regular re-sodding it currently does at Congress Springs.
Perma-Green Hydroseeding Inc. of Gilroy will conduct the demolition and the initial refurbishment of the entire park to the tune of $1,020,350.
Youth commission gets remodel funds for local center
The youth commission has taken another step toward improving the attic of Warner Hutton House by soliciting $20,000 from the Saratoga Rotary Club.
Recreation Director Joan Pisani said it would be a boost in soliciting grants from other donor institutions that often decide their awards based on what an organization has already raised.
