Dickert, Hennig, Knox top all-league teams
By Dick Sparrer
Reed Dickert, Brittany Hennig and Matt Knox each played important roles for Westmont athletic teams in the recently completed spring season.
And the Blossom Valley Athletic League recognized just how important they were by awarding them places of honor when the all-league teams were announced in the Mount Hamilton Division.
Dickert was named the junior of the year for baseball, Hennig was picked the senior of the year in softball, and Knox was tabbed the senior of the year in boys volleyball.
The Westmont baseball team rolled to an impressive third-place finish behind Valley Christian and Leigh in the Mount Hamilton circuit. The effort gave the Warriors an automatic berth in the Central Coast Section playoffs.
It was something of a surprise finish for head coach Jason Miller's crew, but an impressive enough effort to land Miller the league's coach of the year award.
Dickert was the mound star all year for the Warriors, and it led to his selection as the league's junior of the year.
Senior catcher Chris Snyder was picked to the all-league first team and senior outfielder Bill Stouffer won a place on the all-league second team.
Valley Christian won the Mount Hamilton Division championship, so it came as little surprise to see senior Nathan Corrick win the league's most valuable player award.
In the Santa Teresa Division, Prospect players picked up three of the league's five special awards after the Panthers came on strong in the end of the season to clinch third place and a berth in the CCS playoffs.
Curtis Wills was named the division's senior of the year after an outstanding season as the Panthers' ace pitcher and top shortstop.
J.D. Mazzuca was a utility player picked as the junior of the year and top prospect Kyle Bonvechio was named the freshman of the year after an impressive year as the Prospect third sacker.
Junior outfielder Kevin McPeck won a place on the all-league first team with second-team honors going to junior outfielder Brent Maselli and junior pitcher/designated hitter Mike Gordon.
Hennig top senior
Westmont's Brittany Hennig won varsity all-league softball honors for the fourth straight year with her selection as the senior of the year in the Mount Hamilton Division.
Hennig sparked the Warriors to a second-place finish behind Mitty in the Mount Hamilton race, then led Westmont into the CCS semifinals. She was one of seven Warriors to win all-league honors.
Senior pitcher Lisa Chapman was named to the all-league first team along with teammates Jenny Brown, a junior second sacker, and Bonnie Huggett, a junior third baseman.
Senior first sacker Jessica Davis, sophomore outfielder Katherine Bamford and freshman outfielder Danielle Chapman were Warriors named to the all-league second team.
Over in the Santa Teresa Division, Prospect's Cassie Gilford and Randi Gillespie were each all-league picks.
Gilford, a junior pitcher, earned a berth on the all-league first team and Gillespie, a sophomore shortstop-pitcher, was named to the second team.
Knox wins top honor
Matt Knox was another Westmont spring athlete to win special all-league honors as the season's end.
Knox, a senior middle hitter, was named the senior of the year in the Mount Hamilton Division for boys volleyball.
He was joined on the all-league list by four teammates. Seniors James Yankee, an outside hitter, and Peter Yong, a setter, each grabbed spots on the all-league first team, and senior outside hitter Matt Jensen and junior outside hitter Tim Stambaugh were named to the second team.
Prospect dominated the special honors list in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL with seniors Chad Holan and Ryan Sainsbury and head coach Rob Carlson all winning awards.
Holan, a middle blocker, and Sainsbury, an outside hitter, were named co-seniors of the year in the division and Carlson was picked as the Santa Teresa coach of the year.
Senior outside hitter Dave Najima were named to the all-league first team and sophomore middle blocker Bryan Ronalter and sophomore outside hitter Ryan Najima were picked to the second team.
