Hospice fundraiser helps with sliding scale

    By Mary Ann Cook

WESTERN GALA: Paula Wien-koop of Saratoga was chairwoman of the Hospice of the Valley fundraiser held recently at the Hayes Mansion in San Jose. The event was designed to raise money and visibility for Hospice of the Valley, the oldest hospice in the county.

This is the 20th year for the western gala. Wienkoop lost her brother to cancer 12 years ago and has volunteered at the hospice for the past five years. "I know how important it is to have hospice care at this critical time," she says.

Hospice of the Valley furnishes nurses, social workers, home health aides, even a dietitian and a chaplain to those in the last stages of terminal illnesses. It offers medical, social, psychological and bereavement support to the family and patient. On-call nursing and pain control are also supplied.

Fundraisers are crucial because the money raised enables every family that needs help to get it, regardless of ability to pay. Planners hoped to raise as much as $200,000 in this latest effort. Some $10,000 was raised on the spot for a Fund-a-Need drive after Isabel Sandoval told her story to those assembled.

Sandoval dropped out of high school to care for her mother when she was under hospice care. The hospice team, however, came to the teenager's rescue with an $11,600 grant from Community Foundation of Silicon Valley, written by hospice. Sandoval will graduate this month from high school and plans on going to college. "They saved my life," she says of hospice.

Wienkoop and her committee put together some unusual items for the auction portion of the fundraiser--everything from a Labrador puppy to a trip to Hawaii to an olde English holiday for 10 days in England to dinner at your home prepared by famed chef Emile Mooser of Emile's.

Corporate sponsors of the event were Hitachi Data Systems, with David E. Roberson serving as corporate chairman; Community Hospital of Los Gatos; Adaptec, Kirkorian Enterprises; L.L.C. and Berliner Cohen.

Valley is the only hospice in the county with a pediatric program. The program specializes in appropriate-to-the-age counseling for clients aged 5 to 18.

Jessica Klinghoffer is director of the 20-year-old Valley hospice. The hospice number is 408.947.1233.

WINERY ART SHOW; Cooper-Garrod Estate Vineyards hosted an art show at the winery in conjunction with the annual Vintner's Festival held the first weekend of June. Some 600 people streamed through the winery/art show, marketing director Doris Ann Cooper estimates.

The art show featured a panoply of local scenes, including the winery itself, done by the Saratoga Community of Painters, 20 watercolorists who paint outdoors nearly year-round. Jane Garrod is a member of the group, as well as being the matriarch of the Garrod clan.

Others showing off their wares at the outdoor show were Karmen Askew, Mary Ann Snedeker, Dennis Augustine, Carol Heeter, Dan Tellep, Fern Lawton, Mary Ann Henderson, Norm Carter, David Hunt, Ann-Marie Mix, Nancy Patka, Judy Puthuff, Art Hubbard and Nancy de Weese, president of Aegis Gallery.

PLEA FOR PECKLER: The fourth annual Peckler Memorial Race is scheduled for Oct. 15. Organizers need volunteers to help with this event that will offer more challenges this year, pitting club against club and school against school. To volunteer, call Joanne Rodgers at 408.356.1858, or Reiko Iwanaga at 408.867.4525.
