    Special Olympics

    The Special Olymics summer season is about to begin, and coaches are needed for the eight-week program. A volunteer orientation session will be held June 13, 7 p.m., at the Special Olympics office, 5730 Chambertin Drive, San Jose. For more information, check www.sonc.org/sccso or call 408.267.2734.

    Rinconada wins

    The Rinconada women's 4.5 adult tennis team was one of eight squads from USTA Northern California to win a USA Senior League Sectional championship in recent play in Napa.

    Rinconada will now advance to the national championships to be held Oct. 19-22 in Palm Springs. Men's and women's sectional champs were crowned in the 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 divisions for players over age 50.

    Rinconada beat Valley Vista 3-0, Harbor Point 2-1 and Rio D.O. 2-1 to win the women's 4.5 title.

    Ann Bardrick and Charlaine Carter teamed for a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles and Sally McElravey and Janis Jud won 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 at No. 3 to lead Rinconada past Rio D.O. Bardick and Carter won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles and Jud and McElravey won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 against Harbor Point.

    Rinconada swept Valley Vista 3-0 with Carla Ryan and Fran Kristofferson winning 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles, Bardrick and McElravey winning 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 and Jud and Carol Shields winning 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3.

    Youth Football

    Signups for the 2000 Los Gatos Pop Warner football season are now being accepted.

    Pop Warner offers programs for boys and girls ages 7-15 from Los Gatos and Saratoga. Football teams are grouped according to weight and age, and cheer squads are grouped by age.

    Wheelchair Race

    The "Chariots of Fire" Wheelchair Relay Race, featuring 10 teams of disabled and able-bodied young people from the Digitally Abled Producers Project, will be held on June 17, 9 a.m., at the Sunnyvale Town Center.

    The race is part of Digital Picnic 2000, an event to raise public awareness about the needs of people with disabilities.
