Foothill Club hosts lecture on Wagner

The Saratoga Foothill Club and San Jose Opera Guild have joined together to host a lecture by Perry Lorenzo, education director for the Seattle Opera Company, on June 16, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Last year, Lorenzo spoke at a club meeting on Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle; this year he returns with a lecture on Wagner's Parsifal, which will be performed by the San Francisco Opera later this summer.

The legend of the knight Parsifal (also known as Percival) was a popular subject in medieval folklore and literature that interested Wagner.

In addition to his position with the Seattle Opera Company, Lorenzo has also lectured at major opera companies throughout the United States, as well as at the Bayreuth Festival in Germany. The program takes place at the Saratoga Foothill Club clubhouse, 20399 Park Place. Admission is $10. Call 408.354.2527 for information.

Recreation Dept. offers a tour of the Southwest

The Saratoga Recreation Department is working with Frontier Tours to offer a trip to national parks and various other attractions of the American southwest from Sept. 17 to 25.

Highlights include Montezuma Castle National Monument, Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, the Grand Canyon, Lake Powell, Phoenix and Flagstaff in Arizona; Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park and St. George in Utah; and Mesquite and Las Vegas in Nevada.

    For more information, call 408.868.1248.

Art classes for youth come to Hakone Gardens

Los Gatos watercolor artist Amy Konsterlie will again offer a series of summer classes, Art for Young People, at Saratoga's Hakone Gardens, 21000 Big Basin Way. Classes, designed for ages 7 through 14, run June 13-15 and 20-22; July 11 and 13; July 18 and 20; and Aug. 8-10 and 15-17. All are from 10 a.m. to noon.

Students should bring their own spiral-bound 9-by-11-inch sketch book; Konsterlie provides all other supplies. For information, call Konsterlie at 408.353.4447, or Hakone Gardens at 408.741.4994.
