Two Saratogans honored with Saunders award
By Mary Ann Cook
OUTSTANDING SENIORS: Janet Cazel and Betty Feldheym were awarded the prestigious Saunder's Silver Service Award for outstanding community service at SASCC's annual meeting. Cazel has served as program chair for the Wednesday luncheons at the Senior Center for the past three years, lining up entertainment for some 36 or more different dates yearly.
She volunteers as receptionist at the center every Friday afternoon, serves on the board and in the past was activity assistant in the Adult Care Center. She helps out at every Senior Center special event. In addition, she works at the Book-Go-Round and is active in the Sister City program.
Feldheym has been an advocate for affordable housing for many years, carrying on the work of her late husband. She serves as Saratoga's representative to the Citizen's Advisory Committee for Housing and Community Development, a county agency.
She co-chairs, with Rabbi Melanie Aron of Shir Hadash in Los Gatos, the housing subcommittee of the Interfaith Council on Religion, Race, Economic and Social Justice. She serves on the social action committee of the Los Gatos Interfaith Outreach and she is on the advisory council of POWR (People Opposed to Welfare Rollbacks). The former social worker is also active in the Parkinson Support Group and the Los Gatos Unitarian's Social Responsibility Committee.

ROYAL REPLY: When Kay Stave sent off a congratulatory note to Prince Edward and his bride-to-be on their June 19 nuptials, she wasn't surprised to get a response, but she was surprised at the speed of the reply. The note from Buckingham Palace seemed to come by return mail.
Because June 19 is her wedding anniversary date, too, she wanted to write the royal couple, even though she's sure her English cousins would consider it somewhat cheeky. In her note to the couple she said her best wish for them would be that they have as happy a marriage as the Staves had for 55 years, until Ken's death two years ago.
The royal reply: "The Prince Edward and Miss Sophie Rhys-Jones have asked me to thank you very much for your card, and for your extremely kind message of good wishes for their future happiness. His Royal Highness and Miss Rhys-Jones greatly appreciate your thought and send their very best wishes." It was signed by the private secretary to HRH The Prince Edward, CVO. Kay Stave didn't know what CVO stands for. Can anyone enlighten us?
PINK FIELD: Viewfield Road in Monte Sereno lives up to its name this month when it is awash in pink Mexican primroses. Viewfield is just off Highway 9 near the Monte Sereno post office. After turning off the highway onto Viewfield, look to the left to spot some pink.
Trees leading to the Hulme house block some of the vista, but you can get a good view after turning around in the cul de sac at the end of Viewfield and looking up the hill. The primrose garden is the result of several years of work by the Hulmes--Joy and Mel-- and various family members, including a plethora of grandchildren.
This spring the weeds threatened to take over until Joy Hulme called out the troops. Weeds were hand plucked by John, Lorraine, Joshua, Jared, Debbie and Laurel Hulme of Los Gatos and Kathy Hulme Stephens, visiting from Utah.
BOCCE BALL PROCEEDS: The Steve Mariucci Bocce Ball tournament brought $10,000 to CASA and some $31,000 to other recipients yet to be named. The event promises to become an annual fundraiser for the 49ers Foundation.
Sports celebrities were teamed with bocce league regulars. Some celebs spotted were Peggy Fleming, Sharks' players Mike Ricci and Tony Granado, and P.J. Carlesimo, Warriers head coach. The 49ers on hand were Ray Brown, Junior Bryant, Dave Fiore and alumni Ronnie Lott, Chris Ruhman, Phil Ostrowski and Angel Rubio.
JIVIN' FOR LIBRARY: Two new acts have been added to "Jump, Jive and Raise the Roof," a fundraiser for the Saratoga Library expansion set for 6:30 p.m. June 26. Saratogan Zack Gill will play background music, and Lisa King will offer a swing dancing demo and lesson.
Library Foundation patrons are the sponsors: Sally and Don Allen, Frederick and Gladys Armstrong, Sheila and David Brown, Kevin and Gayla Compton, Mary Jeanne and Al Fenn, Sally Towse and Burt Kendall, Jim and Sylvia Katzman, and Carolyn and Alan King.
Others are Cynthia Lee, Maggie and Robert Leach, Judith and Frank Marshall, Suzanne and Sam Mitchell, Eleanor and Frank Patten, Sharon and David Pearce, Cynthia and Allen Ruby.
Patrons are still sought; call 446-5287.
