    WVLOA opens musical with gala

The West Valley Light Opera Association opens the last performance of its 34th season, Andrew Lloyd Webber's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, with a champagne gala on June 26 at 8 p.m. at the Saratoga Civic Theater, 13777 Fruitvale Ave. Performances continue on weekends through July 31.

The musical, directed and choreographed by David Hock, is based on the Bible's Old Testament story of Joseph, his brothers and his adventures wearing his coat of many colors. For information, call 268-3777.

Chamber orchestra plays at a local mountain vineyard

As part of its newly developed arts series, Saratoga's Savannah-Chanel Vineyards hosts the De Anza Chamber Orchestra on June 18. The program consists of Rossini's Overture to Italians in Algiers; Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf, narrated by British actor Anthony Craig; and Bach's Brandenburg Concerto Number 4. Lastly is Hoover Middle School eighth-grader Howard Na playing Saint-Saens' Piano Concerto Number 2.

Although the concert begins at 7 p.m., visitors are welcome to come as early as 5 p.m. with picnic dinners. Wine will be available by the glass and bottle. Tickets are $7 general admission and $6 for students and seniors. Savannah-Chanel Vineyards is at 23600 Congress Springs Road. For information, call 448-4830.

Library has book club for mothers and daughters

This summer, the Saratoga Community Library has organized a Mother-Daughter Book Club. Young women entering the 7th through 9th grades this fall--and their mothers--are invited to meet and discuss a different book each month. The June 24 book is Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine; July 22 is Summer of my German Soldier by Bette Greene; Aug. 26 is Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech.

The group meets at 7:30 p.m. in the library's Community Room, 13650 Saratoga Ave. All selections are available for checkout. This free program, which is not limited solely to mothers and daughters, is underwritten by the Friends of the Saratoga Libraries. Call 867-6126 for more information.
