Saratoga NewsVillage BriefsNetwork founder speaks at luncheon The West Valley Republican Women host high-technology professional Floyd Kvamme at their monthly luncheon, which takes place June 18 at 11:30 a.m. at the Saratoga Country Club, located at 21990 Prospect Road. Kvamme is among the founders of National Semiconductor and, more recently, of the Technology Network, a coalition of high-profile technology leaders who have joined forces to have a greater impact on state and national politics. He is also a partner in a venture capital firm. Luncheon cost is $11. Nonmembers are welcome. For reservations, call 354-3373. Library has summer reading fun for kids Children of all ages are invited to stop by the Saratoga Community Library and sign up for the summer reading program, whose theme this year is "Get in the Game." Kids keep track of books they read or have read to them and earn prizes after reaching a certain number of titles. The library also has Wednesday afternoon programs for children entering grades 1-8, weekly storytimes, library catalog and Internet training classes and special evening events. The first evening special is ventriloquist Steve Chaney and puppet Cornelius Crowe on June 23 at 7:30 p.m. For information, call the children's librarian at 867-6127. Learn the art of paper-making Among the programs offered through the Spring/Summer 1998 Hakone Gardens Arts Program is a papermaking class taught by Linda Mau on June 27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Activities include preparing paper pulp and creating custom blends of paper using easy-to-find materials, including old papers, fibers and plants. In addition to making sheet paper suitable for writing and drawing, participants will learn embossing and wet-paper collage techniques and how to present finished artwork. Participants should bring eight large towels, interesting fibers, feathers, dried flowers and other materials, a sponge and a cookie sheet or tray. The cost is $50, plus a $5 materials fee collected by the instructor. Participants are welcome to bring a bag lunch. To register, call 741-4994 ext. 4.
