Under-12 Green Gators roll to soccer championship
By Dick Sparrer
Spring is supposed to be a time for new beginnings.
But it wasn't for a talented group of young soccer players from Saratoga. They were just picking up where they left off.
The Saratoga Green Gators, an under-12 girls soccer team from AYSO Region 27, won the spring championship with an 8-1-1 record after a solid showing in the area tournament the previous fall.
Members of the Gators played for two Saratoga teams that finished first and third in the fall tourney. They joined forces this spring to win an AYSO title.
The Green Gators edged Watsonville Chivas 2-1 on the final day of the season to clinch the title in the division, finishing just ahead of the West San Jose Smashing Pumpkins (7-1-2).
The Gators' only setback this spring was a 3-1 loss to the Smashing Pumpkins, and the only other mar on their record at 2-2 draw with the Pumpkins.
The Gators, coached by Jeff Zanardi, posted two wins each against every other team in the league, beating the Chivas 2-1 and 2-0, the Cupertino Cometz 1-0 and 3-2, the Cupertino Teal Terminators 4-0 and 4-1, and the West San Jose Blazers 6-4 and by forfeit.
