Sanborn Park hosts another YSI night hike

The Youth Science Institute has scheduled its first night hike of the summer for June 24, from 8 to 9:30 p.m. The hike, open to adults, teenagers and children, begins at the YSI's Nature Center. Lead by Nature Center manager Patricia Kucker, the hike takes participants through the evening woods and teaches them to use their senses in spotting and identifying nocturnal animals. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Cost is $5 per person.

The nonprofit YSI provides science education classes, hikes and day camps to develop children's understanding of and appreciation for the interrelationship between humans and the natural world. Night hike reservations are required. For more information, call 408.867.6940 or 408.356.4945.

Rec. Department plans a garlicky day trip to Gilroy

The Saratoga Recreation Department is planning a bus trip to the Gilroy Garlic Festival on July 28, from 9:15 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is taking reservations now. Among the things to see and do at this annual South County event are cooking demonstrations, several stages with live entertainment, more than 100 arts and crafts booths and the Gourmet Alley, which serves up every kind of garlicky food imaginable, including the infamous garlic ice cream.

A hat, sunscreen and good walking shoes are recommended. Adults of all ages are welcome to attend. Space is limited; call 408.868.1248, or 408.868.1249 for reservations.

Slide program reveals the best backpacking spots

As part of its ongoing series of community lectures and programs, REI Saratoga has invited outdoorsman Ari Derfel to give a slide show and presentation on June 27, at 7 p.m.

Derfel will share photographs and information about some of his favorite Northern California destinations for three- and four-day backpacking trips. These include Redwood National Park, Henry Coe State Park, Hetch Hetchy, Yosemite, the Lost Coast and Tahoe National Forest. Derfel will also talk about gear, skills and trip logistics.

    For more information, call 408.871.8765.
