Drugstore owner will appeal Court of Appeals ruling

Ron Rossi, attorney for Saratoga Drugstore owner Ray Rossi (the two are not related) said June 16 he's planning to file a petition for rehearing the case which left the future of his client's business uncertain.

The San Jose attorney said he plans to base the appeal on the fact that the original Superior Court Judge Conrad Rushing, a two-time winner of "county judge of the year" ruled in Ray Rossi's favor based on the credibility of witnesses called by the property owner.

A state Court of Appeals earlier this month overturned that original ruling, siding instead with property owner Marcelle Bloxham over a three-year-old rental dispute.

Drugstore owner Ray Rossi, however, said he's telling his curious customers that he doesn't know what's going to happen with the store he's owned for 20 years.

City Council looks at goals and issues at day-long retreat

Saratoga City Council members took a day off from their regular duties this weekend to spend a little more time with each other.

The council didn't take the day off entirely, but instead of dealing with budget issues, parks development or planning commission appeals, it tackled internal issues including staff relations, improving community input and discussing growth.

On June 19 the council took a day at the Inn at Saratoga to sit back, spend some quality time and ponder the issues facing it and the city. The council looked at council/staff relations and council/commission relations, among other topics.

Another topic the council discussed is one that has come up in relation to various public hearings in City Hall: improving community input. Councilmember Evan Baker has often asked questions at City Council meetings about why some people feel so left out of the government process when the city informs residents of public hearings.

Other items on the council's agenda for the day included how it can help build a better community and how it can help balance further growth that's sure to affect Saratoga in years to come.
