Bowe wins Wildflower title
Webster claims third All-American berth
By Dick Sparrer
Many high school seniors were just coasting through the month of May in anticipation for their June graduation day.
But not Kevin Bowe of Saratoga.
Sure, he was just a month away from graduation day at Mitty High School, but the Saratoga resident was keeping himself very busy, indeed--running, riding and swimming.
Bowe competed in the Wildflower Triathlon last month at Lake San Antonio near King City, and he cruised to an individual championship in his age group and finished fifth overall in the field of 600 competitors.
Bowe covered the .25-mile swim, 10-mile bicycle ride and 2-mile run in 56:43 to easily win the 17-19 age division. He finished three and a half minutes ahead of his nearest rival.
He also finished ahead of a number of elite competitors on his way to a fifth-place finish overall. The 18-year-old finished just four and half minutes behind overall champion, 29-year-old Robert Kunz of Salt Lake City, Utah.
Bowe plans to attend UC-Santa Cruz in the fall and hopes to compete for the men's swimming team.
Webster wins
Santa Clara University's Bryan Webster, a 1996 graduate of Saratoga High School, finished first at the Collegiate National Boxing Championships held this past spring in Reno, Nev.
Webster was the individual champion in the 195-pound division, helping the Broncos to a team fourth overall behind Air Force, Penn State and the University of Nevada-Reno.
Webster is a three-time All-American at Santa Clara and was undefeated in the 1999 season, knocking out his final three opponents.
Webster works under the direction of former amateur champion Candy Lopez, the director of the San Jose PAL boxing program who also volunteers his time at Santa Clara.
Brandi Mount of Saratoga is a volleyball player at Texas A & M.
Mount an Aggie
Saratoga's Brandi Mount, a graduate of Mitty, earned a place on the women's volleyball team as a freshman at Texas A&M University last year.
Mount was a three-year letter winner for the Monarchs and played for three league champions at Mitty. She helped the Monarchs to a state crown in 1995.
Kluetmeier stars
Former Saratoga High School girls soccer star Anne Kluetmeier was an outstanding goalkeeper for the Penn State women's soccer team this past season.
Kluetmeier recorded 10 shut outs in 17 games. She posted a season goals-against average of 0.87 goals per game, allowing just 14 goals while recording 66 saves.
She now holds school season records for least goals allowed (14), goals against average (0.87) and shut outs (10) as she prepares for her senior season in the fall.
The Quakers were 11-5-1 last season, but just 1-5-1 in the Ivy League.
McMains All-Ivy
Mary McMains of Saratoga was another Ivy League star this past year.
McMains, an outside hitter on the women's volleyball team at Brown University, was selected for All-Ivy Academic honors. Each student-athlete picked for the honor was a starter or key reserve and maintained a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average.
McMains finished first on her team and fourth in the league in service aces with 43, and she also had 352 digs to rank second on her squad and seventh in the league. She was also second in assists and third in kills for the Bears.
Blue signs
Saratoga baseball standout Nick Blue signed a national letter of intent of play baseball at Wake Forest University in North Carolina prior to the start of the 1999 baseball season for the Falcons.
Blue, who has played internationally in his amateur baseball career, helped the Falcons win the Central Coast Section Division II championship this past spring.
