Outdoor expert speaks on safety in bear country

As part of its series of community lectures and programs, REI Saratoga hosts experienced wilderness guide Ken Hanley on July 6 at 7 p.m. for a slide presentation on how hikers and campers can travel in bear country without any unpleasant incidents. Hanley, who is also the director of Adventures Beyond, will discuss the characteristics of both black and grizzly bears, explain what their body language means and offer tips on how to set up camp and supplies in a way that is least appealing to ursine interlopers.

The program is free and open to the public. REI is in El Paseo de Saratoga shopping center. For information, call 871-8765.

Congregation to celebrate writing of new Torah

On June 27, Congregation Beth David, 19700 Prospect Road, celebrates the beginning of a major project--the writing of its new Torah, Judaism's holy book. The kickoff program begins with a 9:30 a.m. prayer service, followed by a welcome by Rabbi Daniel Pressman and board president Marjorie Pomerantz and songs by songleader Madeline Yafet, followed by visiting Rabbi Schmuel Miller's first inscribed letters on the parchment scroll. An internationally known scribe, Miller will supervise the handwriting of the entire scroll, which will be completed in Israel and then returned--around May 2000-- to the congregation.

Refreshments will be served, and babysitting is available. One need not be a congregation member to attend. The event is free, but reservations are required. For more information, call 257-3333 or 257-3336.

Workshops teach the fine art of wreath-making

The Saso family, who own Saso Herb Gardens, invite the public to participate in a wreath workshop on June 26 from 10 a.m. to noon at 14625 Fruitvale Ave. in Saratoga. Participants can choose between crafting an edible culinary wreath or a non-edible wreath comprising fragrant herbs and colorful, everlasting flowers. A $45 fee includes all materials. For more information, or to make reservations, call 867-0307.
