The city thanks event volunteers

The Saratoga City Council recognized the work of local volunteers to create the Saratoga HomeTown Celebration with a proclamation read by Mayor Don Wolfe at the council's June 17 meeting.

The proclamation thanks members of local clubs, groups, schools and churches that have organized the event for the past three years, and the Saratoga Lions Club, which oversees the event.

The council also thanked officials from Villa Montalvo, who have donated the use of the estate again this year.

The Saratoga HomeTown Celebration was the idea of former mayor and current councilmember Paul Jacobs, who suggested to a group of local business owners in 1996 that an old-fashioned Fourth of July party for the city might be a good way of building community. This year's event will take place on Friday, July 3.

Hearing scheduled for valet parking

Residents interested in the future of valet parking in the Saratoga Village can speak to the City Council on the subject at a public hearing scheduled for Wednesday, July 1, at 7:30 p.m.

The council postponed a decision about making valet parking permanent in the Village from earlier this year because of concerns that not all affected residents had been notified of the hearing.

Valet parking was implemented in the Village on a temporary basis last November to see not only if shoppers would use the Village-wide service, but also if residents living in the surrounding streets--such as Oak and Sixth streets--would be negatively impacted.

Humane Society needs donations

The Humane Society of Santa Clara Valley is seeking donations of kitten food to help feed its suddenly high population of felines.

The Humane Society needs unopened bags of dry kitten food and unopened cans of wet food; the agency is unable to use opened cans and bags. Monetary donations can also help the agency buy food for the felines. The agency recommends that checks include a note specifying that the food is for the kittens, and be sent to the Humane Society at 2530 Lafayette St., Santa Clara, 95050.
