Camps keep kids active this summer

It's just about summer camp time. And for those youngsters who would rather pitch baseballs than pitch tents, or who would prefer to shoot a basketball than shoot a bow and arrow, there are plenty of camps right here in the area.

Volleyball Camp

Monta Vista volleyball coach Sheri Hess will head the list of instructors at a volleyball camp, July 7-11, in the Monta Vista High School gym. The camp is open to boys and girls ages 11-16, and the cost is $110 per camper. For more information, call Hess at 257-2640.

SJSU Baseball Camp

San Jose State University head baseball coach Sam Piraro will lead the camp coaching staff at the 13th annual San Jose State Summer Baseball Camp at the school's practice baseball field.

The camp, open to boys and girls ages 6-15, will be held in two sessions, July 14-18 and July 21-25, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. each day, and will feature individual drills, group drills, daily scrimmages and individual evaluations.

The camp will cover hitting, fielding, baserunning, individual positions and teamwork. The cost is $85 per session, and all campers receive a T-shirt and are eligible for daily camper awards.

Lasers Basketball Camps

The San Jose Lasers of the American Basketball League will hold summer basketball camps for boys and girls in August at SJSU.

The camps, led by members of the Lasers and the team's coaching staff, will be held Aug. 11-14, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. each day, for girls in grades 8-12 and Aug. 18-21, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. each day, for girls and boys in grades 3-8. The cost is $205 per player.

Williams Hoop Camp

The annual Sid Williams Basketball Camp returns to Fisher Middle School July 14-18. The camp is designed for "motivated players" entering the fifth-ninth grades.

Session 1 for boys and girls entering the fifth and sixth grades will be held 1-3:30 p.m. each day, and players entering the seventh-ninth grades will attend Session 2 from 4-7 p.m.

SC Baseball School

Santa Clara University baseball coaches Mike Cummins and Lou Lucas will host their annual Santa Clara Baseball School in July for players ages 9-16.

The session set for July 7-11 will cover basic fundamentals and hitting from 9 a.m. to noon, with a special pitching session from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The cost is $100 for the morning session and $50 for the pitching session.

The final session will feature special hitting-only camps July 21-25, 9-10:15 a.m. and 10:30-11:45 a.m. The cost is $50 per session.

The school features individualized instruction in playing defense, base running, sliding and hitting. Each camper receives a T-shirt, and Bronco caps will be given to contest winners.
