    Rec. department to tour center

The Saratoga Recreation Department is taking reservations for its Aug. 16 day trip to the Chabot Space & Science Center. The center has scenic views of the San Francisco Bay and Oakland foothills and offers a variety of hands-on exhibits. A planetarium show is included in the tour. Following Chabot is a hosted lunch at a seafood restaurant in Jack London Square. The tour's last stop is the historical Paramount Theater for a behind-the-scenes tour.

Adults of all ages are welcome to participate. Cost is $79 per person. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The day trip begins at 9 a.m. and concludes at approximately 5:45 p.m. Call 408.868.1248 or 408.868.1249.

    Saratoga galleries plan new shows

Gallery Saratoga, at 14531 Big Basin Way, Unit 3, presents an exhibition titled "Tranquil California" by its featured artist of the month, Marta Szoboszlay, a local teacher and artistic demonstrator. The show, which runs July 1 through 31, consists of paintings in pastel and watercolor that reflect the tranquillity and beauty of the natural world of California.

The public is invited to a reception for the artist on July 15 from 1 to 5 p.m. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call 408.867.0458, or visit www.gallerysaratoga.com on the Internet.

Aegis Gallery of Fine Art, which shares the same address as Gallery Saratoga--save for its designation as Unit 2--is also gearing up for a July exhibition. From July 2 through 29, its featured member artist Bonnie Epstein will show "California Afternoon"--17 new watercolor paintings of landscapes, hiking trails, vineyards, rivers and gardens, including Hakone and Gamble.

A native of Southern California, Epstein says her favorite painting topics are a result of growing up in a neighborhood with many large lots and few children, thereby giving her time to be alone with nature.

A public reception for the artist takes place July 10, from 7 to 9 p.m. Regular gallery hours are Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Call 408.867.0171.
