    Joanna Chan and Laura Lin

    Columnists focus on youth

This week, two aspiring journalists--Joanna Chan and Laura Lin--take on the YouthTalk column as a bi-weekly assignment.

Sixteen-year-old Chan and 17-year-old Lin will be seniors at Saratoga High School in the fall.

Chan will begin her third year with the Saratoga Falcon, the school newspaper; it will be Lin's second year with the staff. Both will assume the responsibility of news editors. In addition, Chan will be associate editor-in-chief.

Both participate in the school track and cross-country teams, and both plan to pursue careers in journalism.

This week, they talk about Grad Nite and how the community came together to make it happen for the Class of 2000 at SHS; in future weeks they may talk about varied youth activities, offer a profile on an interesting teen or present an opinion--it's up to them.

On alternate weeks, we continue to invite young people in the community to write opinions for our YouthTalk page. Length must be 800-900 words. For information, contact editor Dale Bryant, dbryant@svcn.com.
