Hakone Gardens offers a fabric art workshop

As part of the various art classes it offers to the community, Saratoga's Hakone Gardens, at 21000 Big Basin Way, offers a series of workshops in katazome, a traditional Japanese method of creating design patterns on fabric or paper, using a distinctive silk-screen process. One series takes place July 7, 14, and 21; the second is Aug. 4, 11, and 18; both run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Instructor Chie Kurahashi Goldsmith will supply stencils for these patterns, or participants can design their own. She will also teach hand-coloring methods used to create unique katazome artwork suitable for use as wall hangings, greeting cards, kimonos, scarves, ties, and blouses. Participants should bring a bag lunch. Cost is $60 for each three-class series, plus a $30 materials fee for fabric and other supplies. For more information, call Goldsmith at 408.270.2205 or Hakone Gardens at 408.741.4994.
