    Special award to Saratoga student

Jennifer Wey, a third-grader from Saratoga Elementary School, has won the 1999 Nicholas Green Distinguished Student Award, presented by the California Association for the Gifted and the National Association for Gifted Children.

The award will be presented to Wey on July 7 in the Governor's Council Room in the state Capitol by state Sen. Jack O'Connell, the Governor's Secretary for Education Gary Hart and Reg and Maggie Green, sponsors of the award.

The award is offered by the Greens in memory of their 7-year-old son, Nicholas, who was killed in a drive-by shooting in 1994 in Italy. The foundation has awarded other scholarships to gifted high school and college students to help them advance in school.

They also offer the award to students of similar age to their son.

The award includes a $500 U.S. savings bond, and goes to one student in each state to students in grade 3-6.

Wey is also an accomplished violinist, who began playing at age 3.

    July 4 celebration fast approaching

Organizers are just about set for this year's Saratoga Hometown Celebration on July 4.

This year, the committee is promising "bigger and better than ever," with the event geared toward marking the city's recent designation as a "George Washington Bicentennial City."

This year's celebration will takes place from noon to 5 p.m. and promises live country music, Saratoga's own taiko Japanese drumming group, two choirs and plenty of children's activities and food.

Masonic Sojourners, decked out in uniforms of the Continental Army, will offer a presentation of the history of the American flag.

Admission is free to this event, but small donations will be gratefully accepted.

    Personal watercraft banned at Calero

Because of heightened MTBE concentrations in the water, two-stroke engines have been banned at Calero dam.

The ban on PWCs affects Calero Reservoir only. Forty watercraft are still allowed on Coyote Reservoir, east of Gilroy, each day.
