Saratoga NewsMenold named top athleteFormer Lynbrook star keeps winning awardsJeff Menold was quite a baseball player as he made his way through the youth leagues of the area. Then he made a name for himself as a talented football and baseball player at Lynbrook. But nowhere did Menold distinguish himself any better than he did as a collegiate star at Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore. Menold recently completed an outstanding career for the Wildcats, and he capped that career by being named Linfield's male athlete of the year. Menold, who earned his bachelor's degree in economics this spring, had a sensational senior season for the Cats. He hit .437 with seven homers and 22 doubles, and he knocked in 47 runs. He set new single season records at Linfield in batting average and doubles. The Linfield third baseman was selected as an all-conference infielder in the Northwest Conference, and he was also the Wildcats team captain. He helped the Cats to a 25-13 record and to a third-place finish in the conference this spring. The former Lynbrook star was a four-year letterman and three-year starter for the Wildcats. He boasted a solid .375 career average for the Cats and was an all-conference honorable mention pick as a junior. "Jeff has been an integral part of our program," said Linfield coach Scott Carnahan. "He's a quality kid who is a great role model. His presence, intensity, competitiveness and great awareness of the game make him an excellent player and athlete." Menold, who served as an assistant receivers' coach for the Linfield football team last fall, was selected the athlete of the year by the school's athletic department coaching staff.
