Sheriff's substation will add sergeants

The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors' 1998-99 budget will increase the level of law-enforcement services in the cities of Cupertino, Saratoga and Los Altos Hills. Supervisor Joe Simitian said the increase will incorporate the addition of two sergeants to the Sheriff's Office Westside Substation on Saratoga Avenue.

"Our goal is to enhance the level of public safety," Simitian said. "The new sergeants give the sheriff's department additional resources, and give our West Valley residents an even safer place to live."

The cost of the two additional sergeants will be reimbursed to the county by the cities of Saratoga, Los Altos Hills and Cupertino, which contract with the sheriff's department for law enforcement.

Titanic historian speaks at library

The Saratoga Community Library will kick off its summer teen reading program, called "Sink Into Reading," Wednesday, July 8, at 7:30 p.m., with guest speaker Tom Beddingfield, a Titanic historian. Beddingfield has participated in several expeditions to recover Titanic artifacts, has interviewed survivors and is currently employed by Titanic International as a media spokesman.

The free program will also feature Los Gatan Muffet Brown, the great-granddaughter of "the unsinkable" Molly Brown, who survived the sinking of the Titanic.

The event is underwritten by the Friends of the Saratoga Libraries. The Saratoga Community Library is located at the corner of Saratoga and Fruitvale avenues. For more information, call 867-6127.

Teacher collects old computers

What's the best thing to do with that old PC collecting dust and cobwebs.

Monte Sereno resident Aldene Gordon has an idea--give it to her. Gordon, an elementary schoolteacher in the Oak Grove School District, is spending her summer trying to round up at least 30 old PCs for underprivileged students in her district. Specifically, Gordon wants old CPUs--at least a 386--monitors, peripherals or keyboards that are in working condition.

She may be reached at 395-6611, or via email at aldenegordon@worldnet.att.net.
