    City will quietly observe holiday

Saratoga is expected to once again have a relatively quiet Independence Day. Despite celebrations in the past at Montalvo that included historical reenactments and egg tosses, there will be no more festivities at the estate this year. The Saratoga Chamber of Commerce had sponsored those gatherings at Montalvo up until 1997. The Chamber does not have any alternate fêtes planned this year.

Saratoga historian Willys Peck, who has played Abe Lincoln at past Fourth of July celebrations, says the last fireworks he remembers in the city were in 1936, and those were at the spring Blossom Festival.

At a recent Saratoga Business Development Council meeting, members broached the subject of celebrations, Independence Day and otherwise, but no future events have been scheduled.

Azule Park plans narrowed to two

Landscape architect Steve Kikuchi, of Greg G. Ing and Associates, has drafted two site plans for the renovation of Azule Park. Both group specialized play areas around a central lawn. A basketball court and playground are mapped out in both plans, with two tennis courts appearing in just one design.

Both plans are available for public viewing at the city's building department.

The next meeting on Azule will take place during the parks and recreation commission's gathering on July 16 at the Adult Day Care Center.

Contact Cary Bloomquist with Public Works at 408.868.1258 with any questions about Azule.

Seniors' fundraiser set for Aug. 25

The Saratoga Area Senior Coordinating Council will hold its annual community dinner and auction on Saturday, Aug. 25, at the Senior Center. The theme is "S.S. Saratoga." Cocktails will be served in a "Stateroom" with dinner out on the "Main Deck." Live music will spice up the evening.

In keeping with the theme, the event will feature a raffle for a seven-day Caribbean cruise for two on the Holland-America Line.

The senior council is looking for other quality items to put up for auction--everything from antiques to weekend getaways.
