Tennis tournament
The State Farm Women's USTA Challenger, an international professional tennis tournament that is part of the USTA Prudential Securities Circuit, will run through July 9 at the Los Gatos Swim and Racquet Club.
The tournament, designed to help younger players to develop their skills, offers $50,000 in prize money with the winner collecting $7,700 and 36 WTA ranking points.
Among the American players expected for the tournament are Kristina Brandi, a 23-year-old who reached the round of 16 at this year's Australian Open and a Challenger defending champion; Marissa Irvin, a Stanford star who has won or reached the finals of three Challengers since last October; Meghann Shaughnessy, a 21-year-old who won a Challenger this year; and Holly Parkinson. Top players expected from abroad include Rossana de Los Rios of Paraguay, who reached the round of 16 at the French Open this year, Jana Nejedly of Canada and Alina Jidkova of Russia.
Matches will begin at 11 a.m. through July 7 and will begin at noon on July 8-9. Featured matches will be played each day at 6 p.m. with the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals set for July 7-9. Admission to the tournament is free.
Saratoga soccer
The Saratoga AYSO Region 27 soccer league, in cooperation with Major League Soccer, will host Major League Soccer Camps Aug. 7-11 and Aug. 21-25, 9 a.m.-noon, at Congress Springs Park.
The camps are recommended for all players in the under-6 to under-14 programs. The cost is $100 per child for each camp ($150 for one child for both camps). Each camper receives a T-shirt.

Girls hoop camp
The Lady Jags summer basketball camp for girls will be held in July at San Jose City College. Camps are slated for July 5-8 for girls ages 7-12 ($75 per player) and July 10-14 for girls ages 12-16 ($85 per player). Camp hours are 9 a.m.-1 p.m. each day.
