Hakone Gardens holds Tanabata tea ceremony
The Board of Trustees of the Hakone Foundation, in conjunction with the Omote Senke School of Tea, invite the public to partake in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony on July 10, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Hakone Gardens, 21000 Big Basin Way in Saratoga.
The event is in honor of the ancient Japanese observance of Tanabata, also known as the Star Festival. The event celebrates the legend of the Celestial Princess--daughter of the Celestial King--a beautiful young woman and a skilled weaver. While weaving garments for her father, she falls in love with a young cowherd, who also falls in love with her. After their marriage, the lovers become lax in their duties--she stops weaving and he allows his cows to stray.
The Celestial King disciplines the couple by forcing them to live on opposite sides of the Milky Way. A kindly magpie takes pity on the couple and uses his wings to provide a bridge for husband and wife to meet each other. Unfortunately, he can only do this once each year. Tanabata celebrates the love between the princess and cowherd and focuses on her proficiencies in the arts of music, poetry and calligraphy.
Cost for the event, which includes green tea and tea sweets, is a $5 donation per person. For reservations or more information, call 741-4994.
