Saratoga High hosts Senior Awards night

By Michelle Alaimo

Saratoga High School hosted its annual Senior Awards Night on June 7. Many students were honored, and approximately 20 knew that they were receiving some type of award, but did not know for what.

Nicole Behnke won five awards but only knew ahead of time about one of them. "It was a really big surprise," she said. "I felt really honored."

Jennifer Chen also won several awards, two of them surprises. Chen said she was really surprised to win two Rotary Club awards, one after another.

"The Rotary was showing me that they appreciated me," Chen said.

Behnke was also honored with an award by the Associated Student Body.

"I've been helping with ASB," Behnke said. "But I never considered myself to be one of the top people."

SHS academic advisor Gail Wasserman said of the two, "Both have given of themselves greatly to their school and community."

Behnke and Chen, along with Stephanie Sun, won the most unannounced awards. Sun, however, could not be reached for comment.

In all, Behnke, who is also a Saratoga Youth Commissioner, received $3,000 in scholarship moneys, and Chen received $5,000 in scholarship funds. Both students were grateful for the scholarships, saying they would help pay for Behnke's tuition at UC-San Diego and Chen's at UC-Berkeley.

Students receiving awards were invited along with their families to a ceremony at the school. Students who were being honored with "surprise" awards were only told they would receive something. All the seniors wore their graduation gowns to the ceremony.

"I thought it was really nice," Chen said. "It made me realize that I was graduating."
