Saratoga NewsSports BriefsMagic wins title The Los Gatos-Saratoga Magic 12-and-under girls' softball team knocked off Union City 9-5 to win the championship in the 20-team San Jose PAL tournament. The Magic opened the tourney by beating Livermore 13-3, West Valley 10-3 and Lamorinda 15-0 in pool play behind the pitching of Tiffany Baiardo, Marissa Galt, Melissa Mullins and Ilana Sabes. The locals crushed San Mateo 14-1 and the Smoke 20-3 on the second day of the tourney before pulling out a thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind win over San Bruno to advance to the title game. The Magic trailed 2-0 with two outs in the seventh but rallied for two runs to tie it, then won the game in extra innings. The hitting and fielding of Victoria Alexander, Kimmy Barker, Michelle Ernst, Virginia Fritsch, Erin Strange, Kelly Gault, Liz Pelzel, Amy Rebeterano and Julie Schloss helped carry the Magic to the seven wins and the tournament championship. The Magic now boasts a 20-3 record after playing in four tournaments this season. The locals have won two tourney titles and finished second in two other events. Pop Warner The Los Gatos Pop Warner football organization will hold final signups for players and cheerleaders on July 19, 10 a.m., at Fisher Middle School. Signups will be followed by a meeting for parents from 10:30 a.m.-noon. The organization is for youngsters ages 8-15 who live in Los Gatos, Saratoga, Campbell and Willow Glen. The season begins Aug. 1. Former Saratoga head football coach Benny Pierce will work with the 12-15 age group team this fall. This is the first season 15-year-olds have been eligible for the program. Baseball Camp SJSU head baseball coach Sam Piraro will lead the camp coaching staff at the 13th annual San Jose State Summer Baseball Camp at the school's practice baseball field. The camp, open to boys and girls ages 6-15, will be held in two sessions, July 14-18 and July 21-25, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. each day, and will feature individual and group drills, daily scrimmages and evaluations.
