Boy Scouts take award

Boy Scout Troop 535 of Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church in Saratoga was recognized at a recent Troop Court of honor for winning the Silver Axe award for top troop score at the Polaris District Camporee at Grant Ranch, near Mount Hamilton.

The Silver Axe award is earned by the Boy Scout troop with the highest average score in 10 competitive Scouting skill events, 12 camp inspection criteria, six "being prepared" criteria, and four camp staff-assigned criteria.

The competition featured 29 patrols of 4 to 8 Scouts, aged 11 to 17, representing 16 Boy Scout troops from Sunnyvale to Saratoga, the Polaris District of the Santa Clara Council of the BSA.

The three Trailblazer Patrols finished first, second and fifth in the 29-patrol event.

The Dragon Patrol, first with 1,439 points, was led by Dave McKell, senior patrol leader, and included David Azzi, Jeff Beyers, Chris Engelking, Tom Mace, Ed Williams and Kevin Wong.

The Scorpion Patrol, second with 1,392 points, was led by Seneca Roux, patrol leader, and included Fred Luminoso, Matt McKell and Ben Tegarden. The Hooter Patrol, placing fifth with 1,330 points, led by Earl Williams, included Dylan Hendrickson, Trent Weber and Reed Woolsey. Adult leaders were Scoutmaster Fred Luminoso Sr. and Assistant Scoutmasters Bob Wareham and Bob Woolsey.
