NEWS BRIEFS

City Council appoints new finance adviser

The City Council last week appointed Wayne Dippel to the Finance Advisory Committee to replace Phil Koen, who resigned from the post in April. Dippel's term will end in October 1997.

Parking restricted on LG-Saratoga Road

Parking restrictions at two locations on Los Gatos-Saratoga Road were instituted by the City Council July 3. There will be no parking allowed on the northeasterly side of the road between the two Horseshoe Drives and between Farwell Avenue and Three Oaks Way from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The council took the action following recent increases in the number of vehicles for sale that have been observed parked in these two locations on this state road, which is a designated scenic highway. Since this is a state highway, Caltrans will post the necessary signs, so there will be no direct cost to the city.

Budget amended

The council amended the recently approved 1996-97 budget at last week's meeting to include $4,800 for the first city-sponsored July Fourth celebration. The city estimates this cost will be entirely covered by donations.

Home composting workshops set

The City of Saratoga is sponsoring two Saturday home composting workshops on July 20 and Sept. 14, both from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Community Center, 19655 Allendale Ave.

Residents will learn how to transform ordinary yard waste and kitchen scraps into compost. Volunteer master composters from the University of California Cooperative Extension will also teach the basics of worm composting.

There is no charge for the class, but reservations are advised. Call 299-4147.

Business development meeting scheduled

The next Saratoga Business Development Council meeting, scheduled for July 23, will deal with how to move forward with the business development plan review for the city recently completed by marketing consultant Dave Kilbourne. Community Development Director Paul Curtis is preparing a summary of the report to mail to meeting attendees. The meeting will start at 8 a.m. at City Hall and is open to the public.
