    Acquired Space

    Many of Silicon Valley's choicest sites remain beyond the reach of land developers


    On a recent June morning, a long train of kids on horseback headed from Garrod Farms toward the Fremont Older Open Space Preserve. The riders were just some of the thousands who escape every day to these public spaces reserved for wildlife and trail enthusiasts. Vince Garrod himself has grown used to the sight: "I like to see people using the land," muses the 83-year-old farmer and open space advocate. Since its inception three decades ago, growth of the Mid-Peninsula Regional Open Space District, which manages the Fremont preserve, has been staggering: the organization now controls 46,000 acres of land. Its slightly younger sister organization, the Peninsula Open Space Trust, has purchased an equally impressive 41,000 acres, with the intent of protecting the land.   More
