Classic rock opera to play at West Valley
The West Valley College Theatre Arts Department will be performing one of musical theater's best-known rock operas, Jesus Christ Superstar, July 26-29 in the college theater, located on campus at 14000 Fruitvale Ave. in Saratoga. Written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, the musical is an epic retelling of the last seven days of Jesus of Nazareth and includes his entry into Jerusalem and his crucifixion.
Performances take place July 26 and 27 at 8 p.m.; July 28 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. and July 29 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students and senior citizens; all seating is general admission. Free parking is available in Lot 7; pay lots are also available. Call 408.741.2058.
Rec. department plans trip to Monterey County
The Saratoga Recreation Department is taking reservations now for a Sept. 20 day trip to Monterey County, which is home to more than 40,000 acres of vineyards with premium varietal wine grapes. The trip's first stop is a tour and tasting at Chateau Julien Wine Estate in Carmel Valley. After taking the 17-Mile Drive to Monterey, the group will stop for a hosted lunch at Fisherman's Wharf. The afternoon is open for beachcombing, shopping on Cannery Row or other activities.
Layered clothing and comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The trip is open to adults of all ages. Cost is $69 per person. Call 408.868.1248 or 408.868.1249.
Nonprofit offers guidebook for tree enthusiasts
The nonprofit National Arbor Day Foundation has printed a pocket-size guide for tree identification, titled What Tree Is That?, which consists of 84 pages describing 157 trees found in the western United States. Along with detailed information, the book also includes drawings of the trees' defining characteristics, including leaves, needles, acorns, berries, seedpods and cones.
