Class teaches piano to hopelessly busy

The Los Gatos-Saratoga Department of Community Education and Recreation offers two single-session half-day piano classes for adults and youths 15 and older on July 18 at the recreation facilities at 123 E. Main St. in Los Gatos. Experienced piano instructor Carol Cox Faust offers "Instant Piano for Hopelessly Busy People" from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Using an innovative chord approach method, Faust will teach participants enough to play any song from any piece of sheet music by the time they leave the class. From 2 to 5 p.m., Faust also offers a hands-on workshop for those interested in blues or boogie woogie. For fees or registration information, call 354-8700.

Hakone Gardens offers a workshop for watercolorists

As part of the various art classes it offers to the community, Saratoga's Hakone Gardens has scheduled a two-day watercolor workshop taught by Los Gatos artist Amy Konsterlie. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 16 and 17, participants will study Hakone's flowers, plants, pond and waterfalls and learn how to best express the beauty of nature using watercolor pigments and techniques. A demonstration and group critique takes place at the end of each day.

The workshop, geared toward beginning to intermediate watercolorists, is limited to 15 participants so all can receive individual attention. Hakone Gardens is at 21000 Big Basin Way. Fees are $45 per day. For more information, call 353-4447.

Outdoorsman tells of the state's best outdoor adventures

As part of its series of community lectures and programs, REI Saratoga hosts award-winning environmental and outdoors reporter Dennis Oliver on July 20 at 7 p.m. for a slide presentation on Inside Out Northern California, his new guidebook to year-round adventures throughout the area. An outdoorsman for the past 35 years, Oliver will share some of his favorite destinations for campers, hikers, mountain bikers, photographers and other outdoor enthusiasts.

The program is free and open to the public. REI is in the El Paseo de Saratoga shopping center. For more information, call 871-8765.
