Council commends city commissioner

The Saratoga City Council commended outgoing Library Commissioner Jack Grantham at its July 1 meeting. Grantham served on the commission, which considers matters relating to the Saratoga Community Library and library services, for about five years. During that time, Grantham was involved in such matters as investigating the possibility of expanding the library and managing services at the library.

"Jack made many contributions to the operation of the commission," the commendation states. "His probing questions resulted in thorough analysis of situations."

Applicants needed for Library commission

The City Council extended the filing date for Library Commission applications to July 17 at 5 p.m. due to the recent resignation of commissioner Karen Ceppos.

The Library Commission meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Saratoga Community Library, to discuss matters relating to the library and to advise the City Council.

The Saratoga Community Library is a branch of the Santa Clara County Library system.

Saratoga residents 18 or older and with interest or experience in libraries or library services are encouraged to apply and attend a meeting of the commission. Applicants will also be interviewed by the City Council.

Applications may be picked up at City Hall, located at 13777 Fruitvale Ave.

For information, call the deputy city clerk at 868-1269.

PG&E offers up summer safety tips

The record-breaking rain of El Niño left more than flood damage in its wake; it left significant growth in vegetation and trees.

To prevent fires: Keep all objects--such as ladders, long-handled paintbrushes and tree-trimming equipment--at least 10 feet from overhead electric power lines; never use electrical devices near water; teach children that power poles and trees located near them are off limits and not to be climbed; and never spray water from squirt guns or garden hoses onto power lines--the stream of water could act as a conductor and carry electrical voltage through the hose or squirt gun.
