Saratoga NewsOn CampusBellarmine student wins scholarship Jack McKenna, who graduated from Bellarmine College Preparatory in June, was recently awarded the Lockheed Martin Merit Scholarship. McKenna, who hopes for a career in medicine, was chosen for the award because he was judged to have a high potential for success in rigorous college studies based on his academic abilities and accomplishments. While at Bellarmine, McKenna placed fifth in the Lincoln-Douglas Debate & Original Advocacy state championships, placed third in Lincoln-Douglas Debate at the Berkeley National Invitational and was on the varsity cross-country team for two years. Boston University honors Saratogans Five Saratoga residents were recently named to the dean's list at Boston University for the spring semester. Daniel Garcia, Colleen O'Gara, Eric Rasmussen, Lauren Siegle and Erica Stuart were recognized for the honor. SCU honors Saratogan Lisa Telford recently graduated magna cum laude from Santa Clara University and received her bachelor's degree in psychology. She was also elected to the Phi Beta Kappa honor society, Sigma Xi national honor society for scientific research and Psi Chi national psychology honor society. Telford, daughter of Saratoga resident Lynn Telford, plans to attend graduate school in the fall of 1998 and work toward a Ph.D. in clinical psychology. UCSB announces dean's honors list Two Saratoga residents are among those selected for the dean's honors list at UC-Santa Barbara for the spring quarter. Rebecca Swift, a communications major, and Adam Wachter, a microbiology major, each maintained the qualifying grade-point average of 3.75 while carrying 12 or more graded units. Tapestry in Talent poster contest Tapestry in Talent is accepting entries for the 1997 Festival of the Arts Poster Contest. K-8 students are asked to submit their poster creations on the theme "Art is..." on 11-by-17-inch paper. The poster must include the words "1997 Festival of the Arts" on the front side. All entries must include the artist's full name, age, address, phone number and school. Thu., July 31, is the deadline for submitting poster entries. Prizes will be awarded in three divisions: kindergarten to second grade, third to fifth grade and sixth to eighth grade. Prizes include fabric screen printing kits, painting sets, watercolor kits, aqua stick sets and scratchboard sets. Winners will be notified by Aug. 15.
