Development gets final approval
San Jose developer Stan Gamble will be able to proceed with his mixed-use development on upper Big Basin Way, following the planning commission's approval of his amended project July 11.
Earlier this spring, the planning commission rejected the development--four townhouses and one commercial building--saying the townhouses and the project's limited commercial space didn't adequately protect continued commercial activity in the Village.
On Gamble's appeal, the city council agreed with the commission's findings, but four council members believed that if the developer changed the appearance of the commercial building and committed more of its space to office use, the project would meet the city's commercial needs. Those changes were made by Gamble, and the planning commission voted 7-0 to approve the project.
Ceremony to kick off library construction set
A ground-breaking ceremony for the new Saratoga library is set for September 8 at the site of the prospective building on the corner of Fruitvale and Saratoga avenues.
In anticipation of the start of construction, the library will cease services at the present building on July 31 and move to its temporary home in modular units behind Sacred Heart Church during the month of August.
To help the flow of traffic into the temporary library, the city council recently approved $116,037 to add a left-hand turn lane and make other improvements in the road , sidewalk and parking lot.
Saratoga mayor to address chamber
Mayor John Mehaffey will speak to a Saratoga Chamber of Commerce gathering July 19 at the Warner Hutton House. Chamber board of directors President Preston Wisner will also enlighten the crowd with a short talk.
The city and chamber are both key members of the Saratoga Business Development Council, which is currently trying to retain and attract commerce to the Village.
The festivities will kick off at 5:30 at the Warner Hutton House, on Fruitvale Avenue. Call 408.867.0753 for details.
