Sierra Club to hold slide show

The local Guadalupe Regional Group of the Sierra Club will present a free narrated slide show called, Battle for the Everglades, on July 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Saratoga Community Library, at 13650 Saratoga Ave.

The Everglades is a habitat for 14 of America's endangered wildlife species, some of which will be featured in the slide presentation.

The presentation, which the South Florida chapter of the Sierra Club prepared, shows the effects of diverting water from the Everglades and also the federal government's plan to rewater the wetlands in hopes of reviving the endangered populations.

Refreshments will be served. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own cups.

Commission abandons idea on orchard survey

On July 10, the Parks and Recreation Commission decided to take back a recommendation to the city council that they voted on in May. The recommendation was that the city pay a professional polling firm $10,000 to take a sample survey of how citizens feel about using part of the Heritage Orchard for other recreational uses.

But before the council heard the commission's recommendation, the city conducted its own survey, via a tear-out card in its newsletter, and received 1,069 responses. Of those responding, 86 percent said they did not favor converting a portion of the orchard to use as an organized sports facility.

The commission revoted since some commissioners had changed their minds because of the results of the newsletter survey. The majority wanted to take back the recommendation to the council. Commissioner Nick Seroff, who had first brought up the idea of a scientific survey, did not. He said the newsletter survey was unscientific and, therefore, may have inaccurate or skewed results.

Trails meetings to start in August

The trails subcommittee of the Saratoga Parks and Recreation Commission will begin holding regular meetings, open to the public, the third Friday of every month, at 7:30 a.m. at City Hall on Fruitvale Avenue, starting Aug. 18. There will not be a meeting in July.
