Hakone Foundation offers guided tour of China's Golden Age

The Hakone Foundation, which operates Hakone Gardens at 21000 Big Basin Way in Saratoga, invites all interested members of the community to take part in a docent-led tour through The Golden Age of Chinese Archaeology, a new exhibit on display at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. Admission lines are long and crowds are large for this exhibition, but trip participants have the benefit of a private group tour.

A bus departs the Argonaut Shopping Center on Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road on Aug. 1, at 7 a.m.; participants should arrive by 6:45 a.m. Lunch is included. The deadline to sign up is July 25. For more information, call Helen Metcalf at 408.867.9349.

Home composting class comes to the Saratoga Library

In conjunction with the city of Saratoga, the Home Composting Education Program, a branch of the Solid Waste Commission of Santa Clara County, offers a free composting basics workshop to all interested residents on Aug. 5, from 10 a.m. to noon, in the Saratoga Community Library, 13650 Saratoga Ave. Certificated master-composter volunteers will teach the class, offering instruction on how to recycle kitchen scraps and yard waste into rich, natural fertilizer.

Those attending the workshop will also have the chance to purchase a low-cost composting bin. Reservations are required to attend the workshop. For more information, call 408.299.4147.

Wilderness first aid is the topic of free program

As part of its ongoing series of community lectures and workshops, REI Saratoga has invited Jim Morrissey, senior instructor of Wilderness Medical Associates, to give a presentation on Aug. 8, at 7 p.m.

Morrissey will teach participants the basics of "field repair" for the human body, including how to treat blisters, wounds, sprains, dislocations, fractures, hypothermia, altitude sickness, lightning strikes, snakebites and bacterial infections. He will also offer tips on what to include in a hiker's basic first-aid kit.
