Saratoga Library offers program on woman pioneers

Youths and adults are invited to a historical program July 29 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room of the Saratoga Library, 13650 Saratoga Ave. Doris Dwyer will dramatize the life and times of Sarah Royce, who was one of the few female Forty-Niners who traveled along the California Trail during the state's Gold Rush days. There is no charge to attend the event. Call 867-6126 for more information about this and other summer programs at the library.

Sanborn Park again offers night hike

A summertime night hike at Sanborn County Park in Saratoga takes place Aug. 7 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The hike, open to adults, teenagers and children, begins at the Youth Science Institute's Sanborn Nature Center. Sanborn manager Patricia Kucker leads participants through the evening forest and teaches them to use their senses in sighting and identifying plants and nocturnal animals. Owls, raccoons, bats and deer are among the creatures that may make an appearance. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The non-profit YSI's goal is to provide science education classes, hikes and day camps to develop children's understanding of and appreciation for the interrelationship between humans and the natural world. Space is limited for these popular hikes; reservations are recommended. For prices or more information, call 867-6940.
