The West Valley-Mission Community College District announced that Lois A. Callahan will be the school's new interim chancellor, effective Aug. 10. Callahan replaces Rose Tseng, who leaves the district at the end of the month to take a position with the University of Hawaii.

Since 1997, Callahan has served as chancellor-emeritus of the San Mateo County Community College District. Prior to that, she was chancellor-superintendent of the district for six years.

Callahan has a doctorate from UCLA in higher education and administration and a master's degree in business education from CSU-Chico. In addition, Callahan has a bachelor's degree in business and education from Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo. She has taught at a number of colleges, including Stanford University. Callahan has also served as president of College of San Mateo and KCSM TV/FM, and as dean of instruction of the College of San Mateo. And she was the first female dean of instruction in occupational education in California's community colleges at San Jose City College.

Callahan has authored numerous publications and books, and has initiated and conducted a number of research studies on community colleges. In 1985, she secured $26.5 million in funding for community college instructional equipment based on a report she wrote and defended before the California Legislature.

As a community leader and member of several state and national organizations, Callahan has received many honors, including being inducted into the San Mateo County Women's Hall of Fame in 1992. In 1994, she received the Harry A. Bummer Distinguished Administrator's Award from the Association of California Community College Administrators.
