Saratoga NewsVillage BriefsGallery Saratoga plans garden party The fourth annual Gallery Saratoga Garden Party takes place Aug. 9 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Saratoga home of artist Donna Padrick. The public is invited to attend the party and visit with Gallery Saratoga members, artists and special guest artists. Paintings in various media will be on display for purchase. Entertainment includes jazz by Dale Walters and down-home music by Les Landin and the Skillet Family. Food and wine will also be served. For directions or information, call Padrick at 867-1796. Red Cross offers a baby sitter's training course The Santa Clara Valley chapter of the American Red Cross has a nationally developed, multimedia baby sitter's training course available to youths age 11-15. The course provides would-be or current sitters with a range of skills in injury prevention, first aid, basic child care, leadership, decision-making and selection of age-appropriate games and toys. Courses are eight hours long and are taught over a period of two or three days. Fee is $32, but no child will be denied training due to inability to pay. The next two series take place July 22, 27 and 29 and Aug. 15 and 22 at the Red Cross office on 2731 N. First St. in San Jose. For class times or to reserve a spot, call 577-1000. 'Art for Young People' class to be taught at Hakone Los Gatos artist Amy Konsterlie offers two four-week series of classes titled Art for Young People this summer at Hakone Gardens in Saratoga. Classes run from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on four consecutive Tuesdays beginning July 28, and on four consecutive Wednesdays beginning July 29. Designed for youths ages 7-14, the classes focus on art techniques and stimulating creativity. Konsterlie, who also teaches art privately and in schools, explores the basic concepts of drawing, watercolors and printmaking. Participants should bring watercolors, colored pencils, pencils and brushes; Konsterlie supplies paper, paints and other materials. The fee is $80 per child.
