Humane Society offers pet-loss support group

Starting in August, pet owners are invited to attend the Humane Society of Santa Clara Valley's free Pet Loss Support Group, which will be held every first and third Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Pet Spa, located at 1516 Pollard Road in Los Gatos.

Pet owners who are struggling with a pet's death or illness or with the decision to pursue euthanasia are encouraged to attend. The meetings are led by Helaine Ronen, the Humane Society's social worker and grief counselor, who offers a safe place to talk and receive support and suggestions. Those who attend may bring photos or anything else they have to share about their pet.

Meetings are also held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. every second and fourth Wednesday at the Westmont Retirement Residence at 1675 Scott Blvd. in Santa Clara. For more information, call Helaine Ronen at 727-3383, ext. 869.

Star party to benefit Walden West Outdoor School Foundation

Walden West Outdoor School (formerly Redwood Glen camp) is holding a Star Party Aug. 9 from 6 p.m.to 11 p.m. in the facility's secluded spot in the Santa Cruz mountains above Saratoga.

The party takes place under the stars and is a chance for families to get together for an educational, enjoyable experience. Telescopes and commentary will be offered by members of the San Jose Astronomical Society. Other traditional Walden West activities offered that night include night hikes, campfires, singing and games.

The benefit also includes dinner, soft drinks and wine, the latter donated by local vintners. Walden West president Jim Shore, an assistant district attorney for Santa Clara County, says the benefit will help with refurbishing the Walden West facilities while helping people understand what the school offers to thousands of fifth- and sixth-graders every year. "You have a totally different appreciation of the natural world when you hike through a forest in the dark," he says.

Tickets are $100 for families, or $40 per adult and $20 per child. For more information or to order tickets, call Anita Parsons at 867-5950.
